The first Mass at Saint John Kanty was celebrated in January 1893; the last Mass was celebrated on Sunday, May 18, 2025 at 10:15 a.m.
Celebrants for Mass were Fr Cole Webster, Pastor of the Greater East Buffalo Family of Parishes, assisted by additional priests in the Buffalo Diocese. Long-time Saint John Kanty organist Lawrence Maguda returned for this Mass, joined by members of the former Saint John Kanty Choir as well grads of Saint John Kanty School. The rich history of Saint John Kanty includes a grammar school (closed in 1990 but which is now The Apartments at the Lyceum); years of weekly dances at The Lyceum; Boy Scout Troop 107 (celebrating their 100th anniversary in scouting with Mass at the church on May 4); Lenten fish fries; and many successful homemade pierogi and placek sales.
Those with a past connection to the church, the school, the Lyceum, or Troop 107 attended our last Mass.
The closing Mass was followed by a luncheon at Pott’s Banquet Hall, 41 South Rossler Avenue, Buffalo.
From our speakers:

By 1927 Fr. Garstka, who served as Pastor from 1910-1941, was pressed for the need of a new school auditorium. The school basement could only accommodate 300 people and was already condemned by the Fire Authority as unsafe, since it lacked proper exits and ventilation. After three years of deliberation, Fr. Garstka chose J. Zakrzewski & Son to construct a new Lyceum Building. Eight parcels of land (including homes) were purchased at a cost of $53,000. Bishop William Turner granted a loan of $350,000 for construction.
